Mundelein
woman gets parties off the ground

Janel Previn started her party planning business about
a year ago while attempting to plan a Barbie party for
her daughter, Jordyn, now 4.
After
numerous trips to the malls and party stores, frustration
set in. Previn was unable to find what she needed for
her Barbie bash.
She
looked on the Internet and found a site where she could
order everything she needed.
The
outcome was more than she bargained for. The stay-at-home
mom had a wonderful party and developed her own home-based
business although she wasn't even looking to become
an entrepreneur.
It's
similar to the concept of selling Tupperware or candles.
Previn operates Party with Janel, a business
that sells theme parties delivered in a box to your
door. She does most of her selling through catalogs
and through her Web site, www.partywithjanel.com.
"I
offer a one-stop party shop," she said. She features
essentials needed for 150 theme parties suitable for
children or adults. Current popular themes for children
are Harry Potter and Blues Clues. Shoppers can also
purchase everything they need for adult celebrations
including Sunday's Super Bowl, retirement, bridal showers,
Valentine's Day, corporate events, picnics and more.
Customers
can order a la cart or a package. For example, a Dream
Barbie party package would include 8 plates, 16 napkins,
theme dessert plates, a tablecloth, streamers, 8 invitations,
candles, ribbon, 24 balloons, goodie bag items and more.
The cost would be $30.99. Merchandise is delivered in
3 to 5 days, she said.
Previn
and her husband, Andy, who also have a 20-month old
son, Kyle, said they know there are a lot of busy moms
and dads who would appreciate a convenient way to plan
a party at a competitive price.
The
Mundelein woman serves as a consultant for 1-800-PartyShop,
also known as Theme Parties in a Box. A Florida-based
couple founded the company three years ago when they
were trying to organize a Barney party for their 2-year
old.
They
researched the industry, then opened a 22,000-square-foot
distribution center with more than 5,000 items. They
have formed partnerships with Disney, Warner Brothers,
divisions of Hallmark Cards and American Greetings and
other companies.
The
party industry is growing fast. Janel Previn says there
were 180 million parties held in the United States in
1999 that generated more than $50 billion in sales.
